Position Summary
The Assistant Controller plays a key role in supporting the financial operations of the company’s commercial real estate development and operating portfolio. This position assists with accounting oversight, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance across multiple entities, and properties. The ideal candidate has strong technical accounting skills, significant experience in property accounting for commercial assets, including office and medical office buildings, and the ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Reporting & Close Process
- Assist in managing the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes across multiple entities and properties
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Ensure accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP
Property Accounting (Commercial Office & Medical Office)
- Oversee day-to-day property-level accounting, including rent rolls, CAM reconciliations, lease abstractions and tenant billing
- Review and analyze property operating results, budgets, and variances
- Maintain accurate records related to property operating expenses, recoveries, and capital expenditure
- Monitor fixed assets and depreciation for income-producing properties
Oversight & Controls
- Support the Controller in maintaining strong internal controls and accounting policies
- Ensure compliance with company procedures, lender requirements, and regulatory standards
- Assist with audits, tax filings, and coordination with external auditors and tax advisors
Management & Collaboration
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff as needed
- Collaborate closely with property management, asset management, development and finance teams
- Serve as a resource for accounting questions related to properties, entities, and transactions
Analysis & Special Projects
- Prepare financial analyses, cash flow forecasts for operating properties
- Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes
- Support ad hoc projects, system improvements, and process enhancements
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required; CPA preferred
- 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, with strong commercial property accounting experience required
- Experience with multi-entity structures, partnerships, and real estate ownership structures
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of GAAP
- Proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel
- Experience with real estate software (e.g., Yardi, MRI, JD Edwards, or similar) a plus
